McGregor has repeatedly declared his retirement from MMA only to make a comeback. His latest exit from the sport was in June, and now he is prepared to step back into the octagon in January, after getting pulled back in.
32-year-old McGregor has stated his retirement from the sport twice before, in 2016 and 2019 respectively. The most recent declaration happened due to frustrations caused by the challenges of setting up UFC matches during the pandemic.
However, the talk of a potential bout with Dustin Poirier was something McGregor hinted at. The upcoming event is now listed on his website for January 23. The fight is expected to happen in Abu Dhabi, with both fighters weighing in at 155lbs (70.3kg). The last time these two clashed was in 2014, with McGregor emerging victorious by TKO.
In 2020, McGregor fought for a mere 40 seconds, securing a quick and clear-cut TKO against Donald Cerrone in a welterweight competition at UFC 246.
Even though McGregor has taken extended breaks from MMA, he has continued to make headlines for his legal issues in recent years. His most recent incident occurred in November last year, involving an assault on an elderly man in a Dublin bar after he refused a drink.
