Kawhi Leonard Declines Player Option to Become Free Agent

Kawhi Leonard declined his player option to become a free agent, however the Small Forward is “believed to be seriously considering re-signing with the Raptors,” according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

The Raptors star gave up about $21.3 million to become an unrestricted free agent. Toronto can offer Leonard a five-year, $189.7 million max extension, while other teams can offer up to a four-year, $140.6 million contract. Leonard led the Raptors to their first NBA championship in franchise history.

The 27-year-old won his second NBA Finals MVP, averaging 30.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists in the 2019 playoffs. The chance to play in a large market is still “enticing” to Leonard, according to Haynes. Leonard is reportedly considering the Los Angeles Clippers or Lakers if he does not re-sign with Toronto.
