Gary Woodland Wins First Major Championship at U.S. Open

Gary Woodland won his first major championship at the US Open on Sunday. Woodland held off two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka to win at Pebble Beach. The 35-year-old finished at 13 under par, three strokes ahead of Koepka. Woodland and Koepka became just the fourth and fifth players to shoot all four rounds in the 60s at a U.S. Open.

Woodland finished the tournament with a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole. He celebrated with his parents, who were in attendance on Father’s Day. Gary’s wife, Gabby, is due to give birth to identical twin girls in August. They also have a son, Jaxson, who will turn two years old next week.

“We’ve had our struggles, and it’s been documented, the losses that we’ve suffered. But being a father now puts like in perspective,” Woodland said.

Gabby Woodland previously suffered two miscarriages, and Gary withdrew from a tournament due to his wife’s pregnancy complications. He added, “It’s been a process. But today is so special from that standpoint that being a father and hopefully some day he can even see this and realize that anything is possible.”
