UFC 269: Oliveira And Pena Pull Off Surprising Victories

The outcome of the two major fights on UFC 269 was thought to be a predetermined conclusion. Dustin Poirier was set to capture the lightweight championship, while Amanda Nunes was set to continue dominating the women’s bantamweight category. Charles Oliveira and Julianna Pena, unfortunately for that couple and their fans, stood in their way. After Khabib retired, Oliveira gained the lightweight title, although many believed Poirier was the actual champion after his victories over Conor McGregor.

Oliveira, though, proved that all of those naysayers were wrong, including the bookies, as he choked out ‘the Diamond’ early in the third round, proclaiming that he’ll do while others sit by and talk about it. It was much of the same for Pena, who many believed was just the latest bit of fodder for the previously legendary Nunes. Pena was an even bigger underdog and attracted much less support than Oliveira, yet she found a way to get Nunes to tap early in the second round of the scheduled five-round clash, taking the title off her and opening up the division for a new slate of potential challengers. Or possibly some old ones?
